How Can I Help?

Every effort—no matter how small or how ambitious—can help restore, revitalize, and strengthen populations of the Monarch butterfly. And in doing so, you’ll also support the many other pollinators that play a vital role in sustaining our food systems.

So how can you help?

Plant for pollinators

Incorporate native milkweed and other flowering plants into your landscape—these provide essential habitat and nourishment for monarchs. In North Idaho, great options include showy and narrowleaf milkweed, along with pollinator favorites like cosmos and bee balm.

Be a mindful plant buyer

When visiting your local nursery, take a moment to read labels and ask questions. Look for plants sourced from pesticide-free growers, and choose those marked with a “no pesticide” designation whenever possible.

Get involved locally

Consider lending a hand with habitat restoration efforts in your community. The Mighty Monarch Conservation Group, formed in early 2023, has been actively working to restore monarch habitat throughout North Idaho. Through partnerships with local and state organizations, the group has helped establish pollinator and milkweed propagation gardens, hosted educational events, and distributed seeds and plants for home use.

Support conservation efforts

Donations—large or small—help sustain the work of organizations dedicated to pollinator protection and habitat restoration. Local groups like the Mighty Monarchs and WingsRising Inc. are deeply committed to preserving monarchs and other pollinators. National organizations such as Pollinator Partnership, Xerces Society, and Monarch Watch also offer valuable resources and opportunities to contribute.
