ABOUT

In January 2023, a small but passionate group of Bonner County residents came together after attending a presentation at East Bonner County Library about the plight of the Monarch butterfly. Moved by what they learned—and alarmed by reports that monarch populations have declined by more than 95% from their historic numbers in the millions—the group formed the Mighty Monarch Conservation Group (MMCG).

From the beginning, MMCG established a clear vision:

to protect the monarch and promote its habitat

With that mission in mind, the group has focused on engaging the Bonner County community through education and hands-on involvement. MMCG shares information about monarchs and other native pollinators through public events, classes, field trips, and a regular newsletter. At these events, the group also distributes milkweed seeds and educational materials, empowering community members to take part in conservation efforts at home.

In addition to outreach, MMCG collaborates with local organizations on habitat restoration projects. Past and ongoing partnerships include work with Pine Street Woods, the Sandpoint Library, and local elementary schools to establish Monarch WayStations—plantings that feature native milkweed and other pollinator-friendly plants.

In January 2024, MMCG accepted an invitation to align with WingsRising Inc. as a fiscal sponsor. WingsRising supports scientific research into pollinator decline, educates the public on the importance of protecting pollinators, restores natural habitats, and manages land conservation efforts to ensure long-term protection. While MMCG does not receive direct funding from WingsRising, this partnership provides access to valuable educational and financial resources that help expand the group’s impact.

Today, the Mighty Monarch Conservation Group continues to grow as a community-driven effort rooted in education, restoration, and stewardship—working to ensure that monarchs and other pollinators remain a vibrant part of North Idaho’s landscape.
